The Toronto District School Board is considering providing financial incentives to underprivileged students for academic success. It is believed these incentives will encourage students to succeed academically and help prevent financial issues from affecting their school lives. The program, if implemented, would attempt to avoid singling students out by only being implemented at certain schools. Schools would be chosen based on average incomes in the area. This idea is not just to give away money, but as Lloyd McKell suggests, “It’s one of the possibilities the board’s new anti-poverty task force will examine (CBC). Financial incentives for high marks in schools will not work as intended but rather discourage students who are ineligible; it will be ineffective for students whose reasons for failing school is not financial and risks teaching some students to only be motivated only by money.
